Townland of Meenabaltin

Area: 463 acres
Irish Name: Mínbealtine Meaning: The Level Land where the May Festival was held.
Spelling Variations: none

Standing Stone (Megalithic?)
0.5 miles S.E. of valley (through which runs Carrowkeel/Carndonagh road also on W. slope of Glencaw Hill. Precise position difficult to mark on map, as country here is featureless marshy moorland, with terraces and rocky outcrop. Except where higher ground to N.E. interferes, excellent view across to distant hills, etc.

I was directed to this site, locally called a Standing Stone. It looks as thought it is a large portion broken off a main rock outcrop just above it, but it also has the appearance of a partly collapsed dolmen resting on two stones. Had I not been informed of this site by a farmer I would scarcely have considered it of archaeological significance.
