Townland of Ballyargus

Area: 1368 acres
Irish Name: Meaning: Townland of Fergus
Spelling Variations: none

Infants' Burial Ground (Early Christian)
200-300 yds along same road after a narrow road branches N.W. immediately turning sharply N.E., and rising; in 0.25 miles leave this road for another turning at sharp angle to W., then winding up to Ballyargus for 0.5 miles from which narrow Rundale-type fields run S.W. down to Drung River. Follow road N.W, past 3 or 4 of these fields. Site is nearly half-way down one of them, cut in two by field wall, on slope above deep river valley Arable. Good view.

Fort (Iron Age or later)
The fort appears to have been utilised as an Infant's Burial Ground, or at least that part of it which is on the N.W. side of the field wall. The interior is level with no sign of stones marking graves, but outside to the N.E. there are small stones in a plot between the fort bank and a ridge of rock, the continuation of the latter is utilised in the bank. There are slight signs of the outer half of the fort on the S.E. side of the field wall, in a cultivated field.

Standing Stone (Megalithic)
Site in field to N.E. directly behind village. Arable. Excellent view. New field walls divide what was an exceptionally large field between Ballyargus and Moutargus to S.E. Whims around. One of these walls runs N.E. - S.W. across the field and is N.W. of the monument which is on a slight mound. The stone is roughly squared and in front of it at the S.E. is a large irregular lump of quartz as though supporting it. There are two slight depressions on the flat top surface of the standing stone, one barely noticeably, the other a regular cupmark, 2.5 ins in diameter, 0.75 ins in depth.
