Townland of Carrowtrasna

Area: 608 acres
Irish Name: Ceathrú Trasna. Meaning: The Townland in the distance or across from another.
Spelling Variations: none

The Smyth family from James Lucas Smyth 1800-1880 farmed in Carrowtrasna up to the early 1900's, four generations. I am the 5th generation, unfortunately I was not born in Donegal, but my heart lies there.

My ancestors i.e. the Smyth's of Carrowtrasna, Lower Moville parish, farmed up on the Inishowen peninsula, in the townland of Carrowtrasna. My family research has taken me back to 1800, that year my great-great-granddad
James Lucas Smyth was born. He owned land, along with his brother John who was drowned off Stroove. James Lucas Smyth and his wife Mary had a son, James Lucas Smyth, born 1824.

James Lucas Smyth and his wife Margaret, had 7 sons and 2 daughters. The sons all worked on the farm, one of the sons was Samuel Smyth my granddad. This went right through, to the late 1800's and the early 1900's, three of the sons went to America, four stayed in Inishowen.

James Lucas Smyth born 1824 died 1902 his wife died 1913, they both died in Carrowtrasna, where they spent their lives.

Sam Smyth.
