Townland of Carrowbeg
Area: 464 acres
Irish Name: Meaning: Small Quarter
Spelling Variations: none
Caldragh (Early Christian)
Near Tremone Bay on road from Moville 0.5 miles N. of Carrowmenagh:
on left or W. side of road at house called Trean. Arable. Restricted
view. This Caldragh or Children's Burial Place is said to have been
used for infants, suicides and hanged people. There is nothing apparent
to indicate its position as it is a small enclosure (called a garden)
behind an out-house. It is planted with trees and used as a chicken-run.
The present owners of the house knew nothing of its earlier use,
but other locals did. A local Gaelic scholar said that the word
'Trean' meant Children's Burial Place, but father Hegarty says it
means a third quarter of land.
