Townland of Carnagarve
Area: 743 acres
Irish Name: Meaning: The district with the rough cairn or
an area with rough ground.
Spelling Variations: none
Rath (iron Age or Later)
About 1 mile N.E. of Moville on road to Greencastle, at S.E. side
of road 0.25 mile from the sea, on bank far above a winding stream.
Arable. Clear view in most directions except inland to N.W. This
might almost be a promontory fort as it is on a slight spur above
Glenburnie on its N.E. section, the rest is on more or less level
land, with a tiny portion of the N.W. bank touching the road boundary.
It is a well preserved circular earth fort, grass covered with small
broom bushes, and a large stone in the enclosure. The steep slope
to the stream is overgrown with whins and other bushes. There is
some slight sign that there might have been two outer banks, terraced,
at lower levels down to the stream. Another fort to the S.E. is
50 yds further down the stream on the opposite side of the ravine.
