SEPTEMBER 2011

Historical Anchors - Presented at Fort Dunree

Earlier this month anchors from two of Inishowen's most famous and fateful shipwrecks were presented at Fort Dunree. Anchors from the Saldanha ship and one of the Laurentic lifeboats were unveiled at the ceremony.

The Saldanha is one of Inishowen's oldest and most mysterious shipwrecks. All 253 on board perished when the British naval frigate sank in the north waters just of Lough Swilly on 4th December 1811. It's anchor was located by the West Inishowen Historical Society who restored it and presented it to Fort Dunree Military Museum as part of their National Heritage Week celebrations.

The SS Laurentic was a British ocean liner and sank on Lough Swilly on 25th January 1917. Only 121 of the 475 aboard survived. The anchor from one of its lifeboats was presented to Lough Swilly RNLI at Fort Dunree Military Museum.
