AUGUST 2011

Foyle Hospice - 2011 Male Run

Runners from Inishowen are invited to take part in the Foyle Hospice 'Male Walk/Run & Junior Boys Marathon' which will take place on Sunday 25th September. There are two scenic routes to choose from. A longer 5 mile route around the Peace Bridge and Foyle Bridge or a shorter Junior Boys Mini marathon route of 2 miles from Sainsbury's Car Park to the Peace Bridge. Whatever your age or ability you can take up the challenge whilst doing your bit to help your local hospice carry on caring.

In 2005 this event attracted 376 participants and in 2010 the numbers rose to 800. With nearly 5000 females supporting the Female Walk the hospice are challenging local men and boys to lend their support and help this year to achieve 1000 participants. Get your local sports club and pubs involved, challenge your work or class mates.

In 2010 the local community raised 24,000 pounds for the hospice. That money was invested in products and services that help care for patients and their loved ones. 24,000 pounds would have allowed the hospice to buy 16 Syringe Drivers which cost around 1,500 pounds each. This piece of equipment is vital in the management of symptoms in end-of-life care when patients are no longer able to swallow oral medicines. A syringe driver is a battery operated pump that facilitates the delivery of medication subcutaneously on a continuous basis 24/7 keeping symptoms such as pain controlled for the patient. Being able to provide pain control helps the medical and nursing staff maintain the quality of life for their patients.
