Cecilia Keaveney welcomes plan to tackle mobile phone roaming
charges
The moves made by Minister for Communications, Marine & Natural
Resources, Noel Dempsey TD, and the Northern Ireland Minister for
Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Angela Smyth MP, to actively tackle
the problem of increased mobile roaming charges, has been highlighted
by Fianna Fáil Deputy, Cecilia Keaveney,
"Following a recent meeting in London between the two Ministers
and representatives of Comreg and OfCom, who have agreed to work
in unison to produce an outcome which will offer a positive solution
of people living along the border, one being the excessive charges
and also the technical problems encountered due to bad coverage,
or lack of coverage at all."
Deputy Keaveney said this is an issue which a number of constituents
have raised with her and she has been actively lobbying Minister
Dempsey and his Department officials to tackle the issue head on.
"I am fully behind efforts by the two Ministers to ensure
those who live close to the border, do not continue to experience
high and inadvertent mobile phone charges. What we need is a streamlined
mobile service, for all customers across the island". She concluded:
"I will continue to lobby Minister Dempsey and his Communications
Department officials, to ensure that customers, along the border
will see the issue of high mobile roaming charges tackled and reduced
to the benefit of all concerned."
