Motorists need to network on petrol prices
In a statement, Donegal North East Fianna Fáil TD, Deputy Cecilia
Keaveney, said a nationwide survey by members of Ogra Fianna Fáil
had confirmed that motorists can save up to 30 cent a litre by shopping
around. The full resources of the Internet and the Country's local
radio network should be used to tell motorists where they can get
the cheapest price for petrol, according to the Moville-based TD.
"Using the Internet of radio broadcasts drivers should have
access to hourly updated price lists for their local petrol stations."
she commented. "With indications that some service stations
are intent on using the current global situation to take Irish drivers
for every cent possible it is important that we take action now.
The only way we can bring these rogue service stations into line
is by targeting them with a widely distributed hourly price watch,"
she added. Cecilia continued: "I would encourage all local
radio stations to include a selection of petrol prices at local
service stations in their regular traffic and travel updates. Such
information should also be posted on a constantly updated basis
on the websites of motoring organisations and consumer bodies."
Deputy Keaveney revealed she intended contacting the Competition
Authority to ask it to immediately investigate report of price fixing
by garages in some areas, and to carry out an overview of the Irish
Oil Market to ensure that we are not seeing cartels being established.
"While the international price of oil is high, there can be
no excuse for the oil companies and service stations to use this
as an opportunity to line their pockets", concluded Deputy
Keaveney.
