Councillors endorse Donegal Action for Cancer Care Campaign
Following an address by representatives of Donegal Action for Cancer
Care (DACC) to Buncrana Town Council last week, local Cllrs. passed
a motion supporting the DACC's campaign for the retention of existing
cancer services and provision of further services in the county
in order to provide a better level of cancer care and ensure that
sufferers spend less time travelling to get treatment.
The motion to write to Ms Harney endorsing a DACCS document submitted
to Ms Harney on the 27th July was proposed by Cllr Peter McLaughlin
and seconded by Cllr Rose Cullen. DACC spokesperson, Noelle Duddy,
said "We want to be able to say we have 100% support of cllrs.
in the county behind our campaign". She added though, that
DACC were disappointed that they "had not got written responses
from the six TDs in Donegal and would hope to meet with these TDs
to find out what they are doing" in relation to the groups
campaign.
DACC was launched in Moville in April 2005 and they now have local
committees in place all over the county. Their primary aim is to
ensure that those diagnosed with cancer in Donegal have equal access
to cancer care. They are campaigning to ensure that Letterkenny
General Hospital retains and develops its cancer services, and for
equal and better access to radiotherapy treatment services for Donegal
patients.
"We are asking for cross party support. So far things haven't
happened with regards to our aims but we want it to happen before
the government spends the money available elsewhere."
