OCTOBER 2005
Donegal received €11,500 in fight against litter
Fianna Fáil Deputy for Donegal North-East, Cecilia Keaveney
TD has highlighted the funding allocated to Donegal County Council
of €11,500 to raise awareness and initiate a public information
campaign in the fight against litter.
'The grant to local authorities from Batt O'Keeffe TD, Minister
of State at the Department of Environment will assist with a number
of measures to support public awareness in the fight against the
spread of litter, such as local media campaigns, clean up, primary/secondary
schools competitions, posters and leafleting. The allocation nationally
is €500,000 which brings the total allocation since the introduction
of the 1997 Litter Pollution Act by this Government, to nearly €5
million.
We have to ensure that people take pride in their local surroundings,
and those who drop litter more conscious of the impact they are
having on the area and what a negative impact. The grant to Donegal
County Council will allow them to play an active part in ensuring
this has a positive impact. I will continue to lobby Minister O'Keeffe
to ensure increased funding for our local authority in the fight
against litter,' Deputy Keaveney concluded.
