NOVEMBER 2005
Inishowen filmmaker featured at Foyle Film Festival
The 18th Seagate Foyle Film Festival, which runs from the 11th
to 20th November has a strong Inishowen input this year.
The work of Inishowen amateur filmmakers like James Canavan from
Moville will feature alongside other films from Derry and Donegal
- much of them never seen in public before - in an unique collection
for the 18th Seagate Foyle Film Festival. These images, representing
all aspects of life in the border communities - from the Big Snow
of 1947 in Buncrana to the civil rights marches in the late 1960s;
from an affectionate portrait of the last travelling theatre in
Ireland to lint pulling in Donegal - will be screened during the
Festival to introduce the public to the North West Film Archive.
On November 16th the Nerve Centre will screen a selection of black
and white films from Derry and Donegal filmmakers. Featuring strongly
will be the films of James Canavan from Moville shot in the 1940s
and 50s. His son Seamus will introduce the films. Mary, James' daughter
said the film captured images of everyday life such as confirmations,
boat races and building work.
The Archive is the result of a cross-order partnership between
the Nerve Centre in Derry, Letterkenny Arts Centre, Donegal County
Museum and Derry City Council Museum Services. It is imported by
the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation administered by Co-Operation
Ireland. It brings together films, animation, documentaries, amateur
home movie footage, feature length drama, photographs and newsreel.
Many of the items from private collections have been transferred
from film to digital format to preserve this historic record of
life from the second half of the 20th Century. The screening of
the archive material is expected to be one of the highlights of
the Festival.
On the 12th November the premier of Dead Long Enough, a comedy
shot in Culdaff earlier this year will take place. As well as featuring
an Inishowen location, it also features Inishowen actors. Behind
the scenes there is Inishowen involvement also. Moville man Martin
Lynch is the festival's guest coordinator. Inishowen film maker
Tracey Cullen is on the judging panel this year. Log onto www.foylefilmfestival.com
