DECEMBER 2005

Inishowen Family Christmas workshop a huge success

There was an air of magic about the place with the aroma of Christmas spices and an Advent Garden with a spiral pathway of holly and logs, when families came from across Inishowen for the Family Christmas Workshop at St. Eugene's Hall, Moville last week.

A highlight was when the children lit their candles from a central candle while listening to the peaceful harp playing by Joleen Henry McLoughlin. All the children made a Christmas Craft. These decorations were made using natural materials. For example, the angels were made from carded sheep's wool, the candles were decorated with coloured bees wax, willow hoops and tree branch discs were decorated for hangings at home and colourful silk-tissue paper 'triptic' frames were a favourite amongst the very young.

Organiser of the event, Kahtleen O'Hara was very happy with the whole event, saying, "It was a lovely experience for the children and their parents, who had come from across Inishowen. Also the team of creative parents and helpers who prepared the hall, home bakes and craft materials, really put their hearts into their work for the event.

Funding and administrative assistance was provided by Inishowen Partnership Company, Department of Social and Family Affairs and Donegal County Childcare Committee. Inishowen Parent Information Network provided the support needed to make this event happen. The Inishowen Parent Information Network is an innovative group providing a great support for parents on the peninsula. They are always open to ideas from parents about ways to support each other." said Kathleen. Kathleen went on to say that "The ideas for this event come from the Steiner-Waldorf approach to education. As this workshop was fully booked out, I would hope that we can bring more of this nature-based approach to families in Inishowen in the future." More information form Kathleen at 074 9374557.
