JULY 2005
Damien Faulkner in Pole Position
Damien Faulkner took a commanding 35 point lead in the Porsche
Carrera Cup GB championship with a remarkable triple win at Mondello
Park last weekend. The Moville racing driver lead from start to
finish in both Saturday's Round 8 race and Sunday's second race,
but it was during Sunday morning's race that the real drama unfolded.
Having qualified second for that race just .03 of a second behind
championship rival Richard Westbrook, Faulkner was held at bay by
the Englishman until the final lap at Ireland.ie corner when he
forced his way past the Red Line Racing driver on the inside line.
As Faulkner was attempting to overtake the two cars came together
and Westbrook spun out leaving the SAS International sponsored driver
free to take the checkered flag. For Westbrook, spinning out on
the last lap was extremely costly. Had he finished second, reigning
Carerra Cup GB would have dropped only a couple of points further
behind Faulkner, but by not finishing the Moville man gained 18
points more than his rival and took his lead in the championship
to 30 points. Faulkner had gone into the weekend's races trailing
Westbrook by 11 points.
Damien was elated to complete his hat-trick. "It's just amazing!
It's an overwhelming feeling to win three races in a weekend."
said Damien.
