Moville Woman wins €15,000 RDS Student Art Award
Moville artist Maria McKinney, from the University of Ulster, had
been named the 2005 winner of the prestigious RDS Taylor Art Award
of €15,000 for her conceptual drawing 'Relative Perspective'.
This is the largest Taylor Art Award in the history of this long-standing
competition. Over 400 entries, from art colleges throughout the
country, were received and 86 artworks have been selected for final
exhibition in the RDS. Maria's work, along with that of the other
prize winners and commended entrants, was on show in the RDS, Dublin
, as part of the 2005 Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show from
3rd -7th August.
Speaking to the Finish Times, recently graduated Maria said, "I
made that piece during my final year at college. I'd used the process
before." While putting together 'Relative Perceptive' Maria
says she was interested in the idea of how the Internet and air
travel had changed our perception of the size of the world.
Maria, who describes herself as 'a very three-dimensional artist'
will be lending her work to a group exhibition organised by Iontas
later this month in Sligo.
