JULY 2010
Aviation Museum Opens in Co. Derry
The Shackleton and Aviation Museum member pays tribute to the rich
aviation history of the North West of Ireland with a large collection
of photographs, artefacts and detailed history of aviation in Ireland.
Famous people to have touched down in Derry include Amelia Earhart
who landed in Ballyarnett in 1932. General Italo Balbo and 24 flying
boats of the Italian Air Force made a scheduled refuelling stop
in Lough Foyle in 1933 and Virgin Boss Richard Branson touched down
outside Limavady in a hot air ballon in 1987.
The building housing the museum is being leased to the Association
by Limavady Borough Council. The museum is open between 11.00am
to 5.30pm seven days a week. Groups at other times can visit by
prior arrangement. An official opening is being scheduled for the
near future.
