New Ferry to boost Inishowen Tourism
A new ferry service linking Northern Ireland to its Scottish neighbours is believed to bring a huge tourism boost to Inishowen. The new inflatable boat passenger service is set to operate between Ballycastle and Campbeltown between 27th May and 26th September 2011.
Having
a long history with Scotland the Inishowen peninsula often plays host to Scottish visitors during the summer months, however it is hoped the 'Kintyre Express' will attract even more Scotch visitors to Inishowen. While campaigners on both sides of the Irish Sea would prefer the service to be returned to a car ferry to Antrim after more than 10 years absence, the news has been welcomed to the economically fragile communities in both Ireland and Scotland.
The journey will take a total of 90 minutes crossing to Antrim at a price of
£30 for a single and returns are set at £55. Where the Troon journey will take just 75 minutes with prices still to be confirmed.
Colin Craig, managing director said "When we acquired the Kintyre Express from the previous operator in Ayrshire we considered running trips but there is such a demand here in Kintyre for the restoration of the link to Northern Ireland we decided to think again. We recognised that in the current economic climate there was little or no chance of acquiring a traditional ferry. We really saw this as the last chance to establish a passenger service between Campbeltown and Ballycastle with a focus on tourism."
