SEPTEMBER 2007
Spirit of Tara Awareness & Solidarity Concerts
A series of one day Spirit of Tara Awareness & Solidarity Concerts
will be held throughout the island of Ireland on Saturday 29th September
in Derry, Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Achill with over sixty
six acts.
From 4pm in Sandino's Bar, Water Street, Derry music and poetry
will be performed by the harpist Laoise Kelly; the bands Caim, Ard
Rí, Bearfoot, Mojo Kelt with singer/songwriter's Rodney Cordner,
Murrouigh O'Kane, Frankie McCloskey, Keith Harkin, Liam & Oonagh,
Kevin Rotherham, Cruncher O'Neill and poetry from The Poetry Chicks
(Pamela Brown, Jenni Doherty & Abby Oliveira) plus more special
guests.
One of Ireland's most revered and mystical sites - the Hill of
Tara - lies between Dubliners and their new four-lane highway. Despite
the clamor from poets and pop stars, musicians and environmentalists
and many, many more concerned and outraged individuals from across
the world the government has broken ground and is breaking hearts
cutting through the ancient burial site known as the Hill
of Tara.
It is an outrage that the Irish people should be forced to choose
between infrastructure and heritage. As a country we are embarrassed
internationally by profit-driven, shortsighted planning as exemplified
by the fact that World Monument Fund has placed Tara on its list
of 100 most endangered sites worldwide.
Many can rightly point out that it would be an archaeological loss,
and a historical one. It is also a spiritual loss, since even before
the conversion by St Patrick of Ireland's High Kings it was a place
where the Irish sought to express their spirituality. And significantly
for us as a nation, it was the place of birth of Christianity in
Ireland.
The excavation of the prehistoric circular henge monument at the
Hill of Tara archaeological complex at Lismullen in Co Meath (which
was declared a National Monument in May 2007) has already began
to make way for the construction of the M3 motorway.
People are asked to make a donation to the Save Tara Campaign and
show their support by signing the petition which already has over
32,771 signatures by attending the all day concert in Sandino's
Bar, Water Street, Derry.
Everyone is most welcome and all support is appreciated for what
promises to be a most unique, entertaining and important event.
