SEPTEMBER 2007
Public Art for Moville
The Derry based artist, Locky Morris has been commissioned for
the cross-border programme - Heart, (Heritage, Environment, Art
and Rural Tourism) and will produce two sculptures as part of its
public art scheme. It will eventually see an innovative trail of
twelve pieces of public art located in towns and villages throughout
County Donegal and Strabane District Council.
Locky said: "I see this commission from the Heart programme
as a genuine opportunity to have a meaningful engagement with people
and place, a theme which has run through my work for the past twenty
years. Although Locky has exhibited throughout Europe and the United
States, his best known sculptures are to be found mainly around
Derry and Donegal. Some of his work being the Polestar at Letterkenny
roundabout and Atlantic Drift at Derry City Councils offices.
Manager of the cross-border Heart programme, Roisin Connolly said
that Mr Morris' involvement in the project would add to its overall
success. "The work of Locky Morris is instantly recognisable
and Heart is delighted to have commissioned this talented artist
to produce public art for both Castlederg and Moville. Locky Morris
is one of the North West's best known sculptors and artists, so
it's a great coup for the Heart programme that he has been commissioned
to produce public art for Moville, where he clearly has a close
and heart felt connection." Said Roisin.
