SEPTEMBER 2007
Inishowen Community Radio has busy times ahead.
A special drama to mark the 400th anniversary of the Flight of
the Earls will be broadcast on Friday 14th September by the Carndonagh-based
radio station . 'This Place from Where the Earls Flew' is a half
hour drama written by local authors Martin Lynch and Mary Lorraine
McHugh. Work on the drama has been ongoing since the pair got funding
for their project in mid-August. The project was funded by the Broadcasting
Commission of Ireland under the Sound and Vision scheme.
The drama tells two stories that are intertwined. The script is
ingeniously written in that it combines an account of an important
historic event and also a modern day 'Flight of the Earls' looking
at the mass emigration from Ireland which occurred in the 1980s,
specifically a young couple who emigrate to Boston. Connected to
the Boston link in the drama itself, ICR will link up with The Irish
Cultural Centre of New England and also with the radio station WROL
in Boston. WROL will broadcast the drama on Sunday, 16th September,
as part of their Irish programme.
Sean Grant from the Cultural Centre and Sean Mulligan from WROL
will join presenter Emma McDermott live from Boston on ICR fm this
Friday at 4.30pm directly after the drama has aired. Writers Martin
Lynch and Mary Lorraine McHugh will also be live in studio.
'Conversations From a Community' is another project at ICR. The
show will be broadcast each weekday morning at 9.30pm form Monday
17th September until Friday 15th October. The best of local writing
and acting talent is showcased with all actors featured from the
local area.
The radio training for members of the Polish community will take
place on Saturday 22nd and 29th September. Both training sessions
will be held in the studios of ICR fm in Carndonagh from 12 - 3pm.
Anyone who is interested in this training course should contact
Emma or Trudy at the station on 074 9329105 or from Northern Ireland
0035374 9329105. Places will be allocated on a first come first
served basis. This course is free of charge, refreshments will be
provided on the day. Course notes will be available in Polish and
there will be an interpreter present each day.
