New Walking route launched
A new walking route has been launched in Inishowen. The Inishowen
Head Walk - developed by Donegal Council in Partnership with North
East Inishowen Company Ltd., begins at stroove beach and follows
the route of an old bog road in a seven kilometre loop, part of
which was an historic link route between Stroove and Kinnego Bay.
The walk winds its way through remote countryside with stunning
sea views and coastal scenery.
The walk, which looks over Lough Foyle, Magilligan, Portrush and
Portstewart, passes sites of historic interest such as the last
spot where St Columba stood in Ireland before departing for the
Scottish island of Iona. The Paps of Jura and the Isle of Islay
in Scotland can be seen on a clear day.
For the past 18 months Donegal Country Council has employed a Walking
and Trails Development Officer, Jeremy Smith, as part of their Walking
and Trails Development Project. The project which was funded initially
through the Peace II Programme and more recently through the Development
Contribution Scheme, saw the auditing of the existing walking and
trails infrastructure within the country.
Michael Gillen, Director of North East Inishowen Company said "This
recently developed walking trail will be sure to attract walkers
from all over the country".
