SEPTEMBER 2009
Walk for Heart
The Irish Heart Foundation's Annual Heart health campaign is encouraging
you to get active by stepping it out! Now is your chance to become
more active and enjoy the many health benefits of regular activity.
Enjoy improved well being, reduced stress, staying a healthy weight
as well as reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke.
For a healthy heart you need at least 30 minutes of moderate activity
on 5 days a week. Brisk walking is the ideal activity - it's free,
in the open air, calming and very social.
Join hundreds of Irish people and Walk for your Heart for Irish
Heart Week 2009. Sign up to the 4 week Walk or Step (using a pedometer)
Challenge. Using the 4 week challenge card, aim to build up to at
last 30 minutes of activity - apart from general routine activity
- on five days a week. By wearing a pedometer you can be more ambitious
with a target of at least 10,000 steps a day. A pedometer is a small,
easy-to-wear device which counts steps and is an excellent tool
to keep you motivated as you get more active.
Last year over 15,000 people in 650 local groups took part in World
Heart Day walks nationwide, making it the biggest walking event
in the country. This year we aim to get even more people out walking.
We need individuals, community groups and workplaces to organise
a walk for World Heart Day 2009 and join thousands of people young
and old to make this an even bigger walking event.
