SEPTEMBER 2009

NZ environmental film to screen in Ireland

NZ Film Director Kathleen Gallagher, who’s father is from Finn Valley, has chosen Inishowen to premier her latest film in Ireland. Transition Towns Inishowen will host the event.

Earth Whisperers Papatuanuku will be screen at 7.30 pm at the Carndonagh Service Centre (access through the library) on Thursday 1st October. €5 entry will include refreshments which can be enjoyed will a discussion on the film will be conducted by the visiting Director Kathleen Gallagher.

Shot at breathtaking locations across New Zealand, the film Earth Whisperers Papatuanuku doesn’t just rock the boat - it rocks the planet!

The heroes are 10 true-to-life Kiwis who live an environmentally sustainable life - they don’t lecture or preach but candidly share their experiences, lifestyles and hopes for the future.

These quiet protagonists for the environment include: Craig Potton, photographer and environmentalist; Isla Burgess, herbalist; Gerry Findlay, bird caller; Alan Mark, botanist; Hugh Wilson, tree farmer; Kay Baxter, seed saver; Makere Ruka, Waitaha kuia; Charles Royal, Maori chef; Jim O’Gorman, organic farmer; and Rita Tupe, Maori healer.

“These ‘stars’ have saved heritage seeds, regenerated forests, harvested and protected wild herbs, left the car forever to ride a bicycle, and saved huge swathes of old forest. They provide a delightful and powerful example of how a person living anywhere, even in the centre of a city the size of Dublin, can help to change the world. While produced in New Zealand, the message this film shares applies just as much to Ireland as it does here,’’ says Kathleen Gallagher, Director.

Gallagher has received enormous feedback from audiences praising the cast of inspiring visionaries, cinematography and original soundtrack.

Civic leaders, film critics and politicians across the political divide have also lauded the film.

Following the NZ Nelson launch, New Zealand’s Minister for the Environment and Climate Change Issues, Nick Smith put on a new hat as a film reviewer by saying, "this inspirational film weaves together New Zealand's stunning landscapes, eclectic characters and unique sounds in a poetic message of protection for Planet Earth.”

The Irish premiere of Earth Whisperers Papatuanuku is to be held in Inishowen on October 1st. Visiting from New Zealand, Director Kathleen Gallagher will be present at the premiere to discuss her film.
