JULY 2009

Nature Walk

The members of Transition Inishowen have said they are hoping a large crowd will attend a forthcoming Nature Walk with expert herbalist and author Judith Hoad. The "Edible and Medicinal Herb Walk" takes place Saturday 1st August in Greencastle from 10am to 2pm costing €10 and includes lunch.

Accoring to the group Judith Hoad, a retired Western Herbalist, has been walking the lanes, fields and gardens of Ireland for nearly thirty years, introducing the people who come with her to the medicinal qualities of the wild plants that grow there. They have also said that more recently there has been a growing interest in the edible plants that grow wild, as well. "As Judith uses these in her own kitchen and has done for years, she is only too happy to add this information to the walks," spokesperson for Transition Inishowen, Kathleen O'Hara Farren said.

Judith Hoad added that the origins of herbal medicine are primarily wild plants and said very rarely are any of them cultivated. "I am very keen for everyone to have access, through knowledge gleaned from any reliable sources, to the benefits to be derived from these plants. With the world domination of food seeds by only one or two multinational corporations, it is going to become important in the future to know what is available in the wild for both food and medicine."

Judith's walks are full of anecdote and memorable stories about the plants, what they do, how they can be treated and she debunks some of the myths that have grown up around some of them in modern times. She welcomes all ages and invites us to "come and enjoy our natural heritage!"

"Plase book by phone or email so that we can prepare for lunch". For only €10 you can attend a guided nature walk learning about all the uses of wild herbs and vegetation growing in hedgerows and meadows. It starts at 10am and ends after lunch on Saturday 1st August at Jo and Geoff Fowler's farm in Greencastle. Directions will be given when you book." Anyone interested should contact Kathleen at (074 93 81000 or 086 1222898 or email transitioninishowen@gmailcom
