JULY 2009
Fresh From the Sea
The fishing industry in Malin Head will come into focus on television,
Tuesday 14th July, when RTE show the latest in the 'Fresh from the
Sea' series hosted by top food writer Clodagh McKenna on RTE 1 at
7pm.
In the new series, the emphasis is on food from the sea as Clodagh
travels from Donegal to Waterford and from Galway to Dublin to meet
some of the fishermen, fish farmers and fish processors who are
reponsible for producing some of the most highly prized seafood
in the world.
As with her previous series (Fresh From the Farmer's Markets),
Clodagh concentrates on the small-scale fishermen and producers,
rather than the large corporations.
This programme sees the show start in Malin Head, when Clodagh
meets Charlie O'Donnell, manager of the Malin Head Fishermen's Co-op,
on board one of the local fishing boats, tied up because of the
strong wind, to learn about the crabs (edible, spider and velvet),
lobsters and whelks that are caught nearby. Most of the crabs and
lobsters go to France, and the Whelks, which are caught as a 'by-catch',
are exported to Korea.
Clodagh will travel on to Rathmullan House Hotel, where she demonstrates
how to make a crab salad, using Donegal's finest crabs. Fanad Head
where Clodagh intorduces the Marine Harvest Eco-Label salmon farm.
Finally arrving at St. John's Point in South West Donegal to Castle
Murray House Hotel where head chef Remy Dupuy creates a dish using
the Eco-Label Lough Swilly salmon.
