AUGUST 2009

'Books and Crooks' in Moville Library

Nearly seventy children and adults squeezed into Moville Library to enjoy a unique performance of Julia Donaldson's play, 'Books and Crooks.' Julia Donaldson an English writer and playwright living in Scotland, is perhaps best known as the author of 'The Gruffalo.' Julia has written 79 books!

'Books and Crooks' is a five-part play suitable for older primary and reluctant secondary school readers. The characters in the play include: Oliver Tremble, aged forty, the librarian of 'Boring by the Sea' library - set in his ways and fond of tea! Robin Banks, twenty-two, a trainee librarian and very keen. Homer Lott, sixty-five, who spends most of his time in the library where he enjoys reading all the bad news in the papers. Finally, two ladylike but rather mysterious sisters in their seventies - Crystal and Charity Ball. Two criminal old ladies? All actors in our performance were aged around twelve.

The performance was a collaboration between Moville library and the organisation 'Inishowen School Speech and Drama.' According to Morvania Parkinson, Director/Producer, the performance was very much an experimental piece. The play is about two criminal old ladies and two gullible librarians and is based in a library.

What was so unique about this performance was the shifting boundary between the cast and the audience because this performance actually took place in a working library with members of the public attending. We also had no need for a stage and props as Moville Library had all the props needs, such as an issue desk, telephone, books etc.'

It was a very memorable night and for many this was the first time attending a play. Parents, relatives and friends of the cast enjoyed the wit and humour contained in the play, all going home with the message. 'Never judge a book by its cover!'
