SEPTEMBER 2008
Update on Inishowen Carnival Group
The Inishowen Carnival Group are looking for a fresh team of artists
and local people to work on creating next year's submission to the
Dublin St. Patrick's Day Parade.
The process starts this month with a design meeting in the carnival
office on Thursday 18th September at 7pm. Anyone who is interested
in getting involved in the parade and in helping design or make
costumes and props is welcome to attend.
The Carnival group have enjoyed startling success over the last
number of years which has seen them make a number of high profile
appearances including The Opening of the Irish Special Olympics
in Belfast in 2006, London St. Patrick's Day parade in 2007 and
2008, and Liverpool's 800th anniversary parade in 2008 among a string
of other successes. Many of the team who worked on these events
have moved on to other things and the group are now looking for
some new faces to work alongside some of the veterans who still
remain to design and create next years parade.
The theme for the whole parade is THE SKY IS THE LIMIT and the
group will have about three weeks in which to submit a first stage
design for an Inishowen Carnival Group section to the event organisers.
Meanwhile classes for children and young people start back again
this week with Speech and Drama, Carnival Art and Gospel Music all
on the menu. Tuesday evenings from 23rd September will be a busy
night at the Carnival Office with Children's Art Classes from 4pm
- 5pm and Youth Gospel Choir from 6.30pm to 8pm.
Muff based artist Joanna McGlynn has designed a series of classes,
which will explore a variety of carnival related arts activities
with participants creating masks, costume, patterns, prints and
collage inspired by street carnival and which will be presented
in an exhibition at the end of the 12 weeks of classes.
With the senior choir rehearsing on Monday night for an impressive
series of concerts during the autumn including an appearance at
the Belfast Festival at Queens, choir leader Siobhan Shiels continues
her Youth Gospel Choir classes on Tuesday evenings.
Moville based actor Movania Parkinson hosts her Speech and Drama
Classes on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm working towards a finale
performance at the end of the season.
The two main performance dates for the carnival group this autumn
are the Ballyshannon Carnival as part of the Blue Stacks Festival
on 4th October and the now annual performance at the Halloween Carnival
in Derry on Friday 31st October.
