NOVEMBER 2008
St. Pius X Church Golden Jubilee
Next Sunday, 23rd December, will be a momentous day in the history
of Moville Parish and the Derry Diocese when the Golden Jubilee
of St. Pius X Chapel is celebrated.
On this date, the Feast of Christ the King in the Liturgical Calendar,
Bishop Francis Lagan will join local priests Fr. Patrick O'Kane
and Fr. Patrick McGoldrick to celebrate mass in St. Pius X at 12
noon.
A special commemorative 52 page booklet entitled St. Pius X: A
Golden Jubilee Celebration has been produced to mark the occasion
and is now on sale in Moville. The booklet, painstakingly put together
over the last five months, contains scores of old pictures relating
to the construction of St. Pius X; features articles about the people
who raised money both home and abroad as well as those who built
the Chapel in the mid 1950s; excerpts from news reports of the day
and lists of both the people involved in the construction and all
the clergy who served the Moville parish in both St. Pius X and
its predecessor, the Convent Chapel. Landmark events in the construction
of the Chapel, including ground-breaking, the laying of the foundation
stone in 1956, and the inauguration of St. Pius X two years later
are also covered. History buffs will no doubt be interested in pictures
and trivia relating to 1950 Moville.
In addition to the anniversary mass and the booklet, a number of
other functions and events will be taking place to mark fifty years
since the inauguration of the Moville Chapel in 1958.
A parish social will take place in St. Eugene's Hall on the 30th
November. There will also be a special mass for children and an
art competition involving all schools in the parish, the theme being
'our church'.
