JULY 2008
First Donegal Book Fair
A number of rare and exceptional books will be on show and for
sale at the first ever Donegal Book Fair, which takes place in Jackson's
Hotel, Ballybofey, on Saturday 2nd August.
Among these will be "Inis-Owen and Tirconnell", an account
of antiquities and writers of County Donegal by William James Doherty
which was published in 1895; "Sermons in Irish- Gaelic vocabulary,
a memoir of the Bishop and his times by Rev. Canon Ulick J. Bourke,
which was published in 1877.
Other books will include "Picturesque Donegal, it's mountains,
rivers and lakes", which is the Great Northern Ireland Company's
illustrated guide to the sporting and touring grounds of the North
of Ireland Company's illustrated guide by Edgar S. Shrubsole and
published in 1908.
The Northern Fiddler which details the music and musicians of Donegal
and Tyrone by Allen Reldman and Eamonn O'Doherty, published in 1980.
Also on show will be a considerable selection of books on Church
and Ulster history: historical works of the Derry area; works of
Irish literature and on general Irish history.
The Fair is being organised by Danny McIntyre of the Jason Clarke
Foundation, the body who give help and hope for persons with brain
injuries and stroke, assisted by Ken Harron of Barnacle Books, Kilcar,
and Liam Hoey of Convoy. Danny said the Fair would also feature
a large selection of Quality antiques on sale at the various stalls.
"This Fair will feature exhibitors of books from counties Donegal,
Derry Tyrone, Sligo and Leitrim and we will also have stalls with
rare antiques, old rare coins and other artefacts and people can
purchase any item which takes their fancy throughout the day."
He said.
The stalls are available for €50 for those wishing to take
part and Danny McIntyre said there had already been many expressions
of interest. "I must reiterate at this stage, with just over
a month left to the Fair that all stalls must be paid for in advance
to ensure your participation. This is extremely important to secure
your location on the day and I would urge anyone intending to take
a stall to not leave it to the last minute".
Anyone wishing to take a stall at the fair can contact Danny on
074 91 31078 or mobile 087 6709568.
Ken Harron can be contacted on 074 97 32938 and Liam Hoey is contactable
