Local History Walk
Tremone Historical Society will take a walk around places of interest
in Carrowmenagh, Carrowbeg, Ballymagaraghy, Meenletterbale, Mossyglen
on Sunday 31st August. Commencing at Carrowmena Community Centre
at 2pm. Visiting one of the last Thrashing Horse mills erected by
Wm Garmany, Derry at the time of the Boer war 1899. It is situated
in one of the Houses of the Evictions in 1881.
What interest had Wm Garmany in the Boer war? Old Bridge House,
Carrowbeg. Where did the Hamiltons, Baxters, McIntyres, Thompsons
who started "Thompsons Weekly" Derry, later Canada, finally
Fleet Street London come from? Where in North Co Antrim did the
wallaces come from? To Tremone Bay the old bridge and new one. What
connection has the Carrowbeg School 1873 with the murder of Lord
Leitrim? The Presbyterian church now decommissioned, Ballymagaraghy,
Fairy Chairs, Stone Row - Mass Rock where is the foundation of the
Hermitage? Did Archie McDonald row across the 35 miles stretch of
water between Islay, Ballymagaraghy? See his house with his family.
Meenletterbale Neoliphic Portal Tomb. Mossyglen Burial ground of
Unbaptised Babies. Subject to consent of land owners. James Baxter
lived in New Zealand until the ripe old age of 113 years and died
at Pleasant Place. Then back to Carrowmenagh Community Centre for
light refreshments.
