Positive news for Scoil Eoghan
Donegal North East Deputy Cecilia Keaveney TD, has welcomed the
decision by her party colleague, Mary Hanafin TD, Minister for Education
& Science to grant Scoil Eoghan, Moville a new building on the
existing 'girls school' site.
Deputy Keaveney explained, "I am delighted with Minister Hanafin's
decision to grant a new building to Scoil Eoghan, Moville. The existing
'girls school' is to be replaced by a purpose built 8 teacher school
and I am informed that this is to be completed within a two year
timescale. I realize that there will be a certain degree of disruption
during this period, however, the sooner the work begins the sooner
it will be completed and having seen the progress made by Moville
Community College. I am certain that parents and staff will be happy
to make the sacrifice for the long-term gain."
Deputy Keaveney said that this is not the only good news for Scoil
Eoghain which has also been included in Band II of the DEIS programme,
a programme introduced by Minister Hanafin to assist disadvantaged
schools. Scoil Eoghain is one of 350 schools nationally to benefit
from the programme. Band II inclusive in DEIS has many important
benefits to the school including entering the School Meals Programme;
access to a Home School Liaison getting a programme to assist the
children leaving the primary system to go smoothly into the secondary
school; getting additional, non-pay/capital allocation; additional
funding under the school books grant scheme; access to literacy/numeracy
support service including specific numeracy and literacy measures;
access to supports (both academic and non academic) for young people
based on best practice identified through the School Completion
Programme.
Finally, the school is also now eligible for planning supports
and professional development for the teaching staff. "These
are all very important supports for pupils in Scoil Eoghan and I
am very pleased that the school will benefit from inclusion under
Band II of the DEIS programme," concluded Deputy Keaveney.
