OCTOBER 2006
Concern expressed over housing applications
The spokesperson of the newly-formed Ballybrack Residents Group
has expressed concern at the number of new housing developments
proposed for the Greencastle area in the coming months. Ballybrack
Residents Group spokesperson Trish Murphy is concerned about five
housing development applications totalling some 270 houses.
"The nature and size of these developments is giving local
residents cause for concern" said Ms. Murphy. "because
they will radically change the local area."
Ms. Murphy and fellow BRG member Shiela McGonigle have been going
door to door in the area to gauge the opinion of local residents
about the developments. What they find, Ms Murphy says, is that
the general public are largely unaware of the number and size of
the planned estates. "Residents understand there will be development,
but it is the scale and nature of these developments that is out
of hand."
There are two separate applications before Donegal County Council
for Ballybrack. One, for 42 dwellings, is due to be ruled on by
the 29th November. The other (74 dwellings) is due for decision
on 1st April 2007.
In addition there are separate applications for 53 and 46 unit
developments in Drumaweir and a 57 unit development in Ballymacarther.
"There are very few two storey buildings in the area. It's
mostly bungalows. These new estates will spoil the look of the area
not to mention put a major strain on the road and sewerage infrastructure".
Trish added.
