OCTOBER 2006
€2.5m Cross Border Programme
The inaugural meeting of a new €2.5m Programme supported by
Strabane and Donegal Councils and the INTERREG IIIA Programme has
been conducted in Lifford.
The HEART (Heritage, Environment, Arts and Rural Tourism) project
will be targeted at ten towns or villages on a cross border basis
to give the area a much needed boost of investment. The project
will include an environmental improvement scheme, shop front improvement
scheme, public art scheme and additional signage in each town or
village.
The HEART programme is funded through the INTERREG IIIa programme
managed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and
Border Action, the International Fund for Ireland, the private sector,
Strabane District Council and Donegal County Council. Commenting
on the meeting, Cllr. Thomas Kerrigan, Chairman of Strabane District
Council stated: "This project sees another example of the great
work that can be done working with our neighbours, on a cross border
basis. The decline of towns and villages in the area can be tangibly
addressed by a programme like this. Strabane District Council has
realised successful programmes such as Strabane 2000, bring a positive
atmosphere and pride to our local areas. These initiatives need
to make a lasting difference. "I believe this programme will."
Joined-up working between central, local and cross-border government
is key to the success of the programme. And equally important will
be the input and energy of the local community. Cllr. Enda Bonner,
Mayor of Donegal County Council explained, "The input of our
local communities is key to the success of this ambitious project.
Our commitment to the regeneration of our towns and villages will
be greatly enhanced by our people, young and old - everyone's input
is welcome."
The target towns in the Donegal area are Ballyshannon, Ardara,
Raphoe, Ballybofey, Stranorlar,Moville and Ramelton. In the Strabane
area, a process of consultation will be undertaken over the coming
weeks, after which the towns or villages will be selected to participate
in the programme.
