NOVEMBER 2006
Tremone Historical Society
After several years of inactivity - Tremone Historical Society
has been reactivated. During a public meeting held at Carrowmenagh
Community Centre on Monday 16th October, 2006, it was agreed to
re-establish the Historical Society. The society was initially formed
in 1998 and has been involved in several different projects.
Perhaps the most successful initiative was to erect a commemorative
plaque to the Young Irelander of some renown in the area, Thomas
D'Arcy McGee. The Plaque can be viewed at the car park at Tremone
Bay. A souvenir booklet was also launched at the time. The general
goals of the society will remain the same to protect and promote
the local heritage. All agreed at the public meeting that there
are many positive benefits in having a local historical society
- from promoting tourism to preserving the environment. Until a
full committee is elected at the next meeting, local historian John
A McLaughlin was elected as chairman for an interim period.
Also agreed at the meeting was to develop an appreciation of the
history and heritage of Falmore House in the townland of Falmore.
If anyone has stories or old photographs concerning Falmore House,
Tremore Historical Society would appreciated the opportunity to
photocopy the material etc. So please don't hesitate to contact
John A. McLaughlin at Carrowmenagh Community Centre concerning this
project.
It is proposed that we visit Mass Rocks, Mass Green, Sweat Houses,
Megalithic Court Tombs, Ports at Tremone Bay, Burial Ground of unbaptised
infants and other places of historical interest in the wider area.
The next meeting of Tremone Historical Society will be posted on
the website. All are warmly welcome to attend the next meeting.
