If you hear a corncrake call the hotline!
BirdWatch Ireland is renewing its call for reports from anyone
who hears a Corncrake in Donegal. Their census of calling male Corncrakes
- Ireland only globally threatened bird species - continues until
July 10th. Last year Donegal held 104 calling male Corncrakes.
So far this year, half way through the census, 93 birds have been
confirmed in the County, so field worker Sandy Alcorn is hoping
that there are more birds out there.
At this time of year the Corncrakes are likely to turn up at new
sites. To date, 11 Corncrakes have been confirmed in Inishowen and
9 in Fanad - including "The Rinmore Romeo" at the Marine
Harvest plant. No birds were reported from Tullagh Point, though
one is regularly heard near The Rusty Nail in Clonmany and another
at Rockstown.
If you hear a Corncrake, please call Sandy on the Hotline on 074
9165117.
