Background: The Poetry Chicks first met at last year's Gasyard Féile following a series of performance poetry workshops and a live performance showcase facilitated by the 2005 World Slam Champion, Kat Francois and were further brought together through their participation in the EVE Project from Guildhall Press, Derry (published as both a book and CD compiled by Jenni), funded by the Arts Council of Northern Irelands National Lottery New Works programme. Inspired by the energy and power of these collective experiences, the Poetry Chicks were born, encompassing three very unique oral voices of varying creative style, experience, skill and attitude. Based at the Gasyard Centre, in the heart of the Bogside/Brandywell area of the city, they have already established a reputation as both performance poets and writers on their own merit, having participated in numerous events, as individuals and as a group, throughout the North of Ireland. Abby is also the current holder of the Belfast Performance Poetry Cup 2006 with Pamela as runner-up; having beaten off some stiff competition from over 33 poets as part of this year's Cathedral Festival in Belfast. Jenni will be travelling to Australia next week to join six other members (Aisling Doherty, Dan Eggs, Ellen Factor, Gordon Hewitt, Chelley McLear and Bob Rainey) from the Belfast Poets on-line group who are currently on a tour of all the major OZ cities as part of the International Poetry Festival until mid-September. Should you require any more details please do not hesitate to contact us direct on poetrychicks3@yahoo.co.uk or visit our website, as listed above. Please also feel free to circulate this email to those you think may be interested. Furthermore, we are more than willing to partake in and conduct workshops, future performances and related events meeting and working with other writers, artists and community groups and welcome any and all opportunity. Looking forward to seeing some of you this Thursday! |
