60,000 Inishowen Records Now Online
Anyone wanting to research their Inishowen ancestry can now access
a massive online database.
Researchers at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) have spent
years trawling through baptism, marriage and death records retrieved
from churches throughout the peninsula. More than 60,000 records
have now been retrieved and added to IFHFs online database.
The records which are now available on www.donegal.rootsireland.ie
will be a major boost for anyone interested in finding out about
their familys history.
The IFHF is the co-ordinating body for a network of government approved
genealogical research centres in the Republic of Ireland and in
Northern Ireland. The organisation has computerised almost 40 million
Irish ancestral records, primarily church births (baptisms), marriages
and deaths.
People in Inishowen may also be interested in news that the Derry
Genealogy Centre has computerised 66,000 headstone inscriptions
from 117 graveyards plus the pre 1930 registers of Derry City Cemetery.
The database will normally return the name of the graveyard, date
of death, name of deceased, age and townland together with a comment
recording relationships, where provided to other people recorded
on the same headstone.
These records can be accessed on the Derry site at derry.brsgenealogy.com
