FEBRUARY 2010
Lifeline for Lough Foyle Ferry
The cross border Lough Foyle ferry has been given a lifeline by
the Limavady District Council as they have agreed to share the funding
with Donegal County Council. The Limavady Borough has agreed to
match the financial commitment of the Donegal CC which will see
the Lough Foyle Ferry continuing to operate as normal.
There had been some fears that this valuable asset to the North
West region would have to cease operating due to financial difficulties
after an annual Government subsidy ran out in October. A joint application
by both Councils has been submitted to the European Union Interreg
IVA programme with the hope of securing further funding for next
year.
This will be a welcome boost as the ferry is a valuable form of
public transport and it has also become an integral part of the
tourism trade on both sides of Lough Foyle.
