Divers set to recall discovery of La Trinidad Valencera wreckage

Members of the public will get the opportunity at first hand to hear about the discovery of the Spanish Armada wreck the "La Trinidad Valencera" at Kinnego Bay by members of the City of Derry Sub Aqua Club who will be in attendance at this years Foyle Days festival to be held in Derry.

The wreckage was discovered by members of City of Derry Sub Aqua Club in 1971 just of the Donegal coast near Kinnego Bay. The ship, the fourth largest of the Spanish Armada sank during a violent storm back in 1588 and was discovered almost 400 years later by the dive team.

There is a permanent exhibition at Derry City's Tower Museum which tells the story of the people involved, the soldiers and sailors aboard La Trinidad Valencera and the divers and archaeologists who discovered and excavated the site. The exhibition will come to life during the Foyle Days celebrations as staff from the Heritage and Museum Services will join with some of the divers to narrate the story, answer questions and show examples of some of the artefacts found.

The Tower Museum currently exhibits an array of artefacts from the wreckage which are on loan from the Ulster Museum. They include cannons, textiles, pottery, wooden bowls, pewter dishes, goblets, coins along with many more items.
