Moville Library's search for old items
Gerard Duddy, Moville Branch Librarian, is urging people to donate
old photos and document of interest to help build up the library's
archive.
Gerard is appealing for people to bring in any old photos or records
that may help to paint a picture of what Moville was like years
ago. He said, "So far the Square-based library has started
to build up its collection and it has proved popular with the locals.
We started collecting the information because we realised the community
wanted it. There is a tendency that people want to find material
relating to the past. There are a lot of people coming and looking
for old photos of past history, we have a lot of stuff on the shelves
but there was this need for community archives so that is the very
reason we have decided we need to form them." Gerard went on
to say, "One of our aims in the library service is to act as
a collective memory to have a collective heritage and making the
local material available what ever shape or form it happens to be
in, it is a combination of collective memory and heritage."
Gerard has been lucky enough to trace most copies of The Moville
Emigrant - this was a parish news letter published for people who
had moved away from Moville and wanted to be kept informed of what
was going on in the area. It was posted out to people across the
world.
Gerard said, The Moville Emigrant is a prime example of what we
are looking for and we have most records in the library of this.
It gives you an insight into history of that period in time. The
novelty of this is that it is open and people coming from overseas
can tap into this reservoir of knowledge. It is essential that the
library collects the material because there are a number of groups
and local schools who want to find out more about local history.
We have a lot of people coming in from overseas and we also get
a lot of local school children. There is a tendency for people to
find out about their past."
People can donate photos or documents or copies can be made at
the library. If anyone has anything of interest please call into
the library, which is open Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm and 5pm to 8pm,
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm
to 5.30pm. On Saturday it is open from 10.30am to 2pm. To contact
