Stroove Beach receives Blue Flag Award
It has been announced that 11 Donegal beaches were awarded the
Blue Flag. Included were Stroove, Portsalon, Rossknowlagh, Fintra,
Narin-Portnoo, Carrickfinn, Bundoran and Marble Hill.
Donegal TD Niall Blaney welcomed the news. He said: "These
beaches were awarded the Blue Flag based on their water quality,
facilities for visitors, beach management, environmental information,
and display facilities. The Blue Flag Awards are a recognition of
beach and environmental quality and they are an easily recognisable
assurance to tourists."
"The Government's commitment to improving water quality is
paying dividends. €4.7 billion is allocated for the improvement
and expansion of national water services in the National Development
Plan 2007-2013. That is an increaser of 27 per cent spent under
the previous National Development Plan. We have learned from recent
events in Galway that water quality cannot be prioritised highly
enough." Niall went on to say that keeping Inishowen beaches
clean is crucial for the tourism industry. He added that Donegal
has some of the finest beaches in Ireland and it is vital that we
protect our natural assets. "Donegal has made quite a name
for itself in surfing circles as one of the more unspoilt shorelines
in the country and these Blue Flag Awards will help consolidate
that reputation".
