New Plan for Inishowen Gards
Details have been issued on longer opening hours in Garda stations
across the peninsula. Other initiatives will include increased manpower
and millions of euros investment into the regeneration of Garda
stations. The plans, which have been part of a five year programme,
will come into effect imminently.
Superintendent Vincent O'Brien said "The introduction of the
later opening hours is to accommodate the service public who are
at work during the day. The Flexible working hours will be reviewed
in two months."The five strategic goals include national and
international security, crime, traffic and road safety, public order
and ethnic and cultural diversity. The Superintendent added that
the reshaping of the force in Inishowen has been on the agenda for
some time. "The Commissioner wanted to increase manpower from
one Sergeant and five Gards to 2 sergeants and 12 Gards."
Superintendent O'Brien said, "I spotted gaps in the north
Inishowen area. Five years ago when I arrived in Buncrana I made
a decision to set out a five year plan to address the problem areas.
I have seen new stations in place at Burnfoot and Muff, whilst Malin
has been renovated. The worst aspect of my time here has been witnessing
more than 30 young people loose their lives in road accidents. I'm
very glad that the programme addresses that specific area."
