FEBRUARY 2007
Making History
By Brian Friel
This St. Patrick's weekend at An Grianán Theatre is, 'Flight
of the Earls' drama, Making History by Brian Friel. 2007 marks the
400th anniversary of the epoch making 'Flight of the Earls, an event
which marked the end of the old Gaelic order and changed Ireland
for ever. To mark this, An Grianán Theatre Ltd will present
Brian Friel's period drama Making History.
Making History follows the story of Hugh O'Neill and how he found
himself facing the prospect of becoming a historical hero figure
despite all the facts that reduced him to poverty, exile and defeat.
Hugh O'Neill was portrayed as the unquestionable hero of the Gaelic
Chieftains, the man, who in 1601, allied himself with the Spanish
as part of a burgeoning counter-Reformation movement only to be
vanquished by the English at the Battle of Kinsale in County Cork.
This play was first performed by the Field Day Players in 1988,
and was revived last year to widespread critical acclaim by Dublin's
Ouroboros Theatre: The play and cast received high praise, and the
play won the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Costume Design for
the work of Sinead Cuthbert.
As one of the North West's key cultural organisations, An Grianán
Productions is very pleased to be associated with the Flight of
the Earls commemorations and in particular to be involved with reviving
Ouroboros' excellent 2005 production. Making History also marks
the continuation of An Grianán's association with Brian Friel,
the previous productions are 1999's Translations and 2003's award
winning production of Dancing at Lughnasa.
Making History runs at An Grianán Theatre from Wednesday
14th March to Saturday 17th March at 8pm with additional matinee
performances at 11am from Wednesday to Friday 16th March. It will
