APRIL 2007
The Culdaff Climbfest
Organisers of a unique event have high hopes it will lead to a
major tourism boost for Inishowen. The Culdaff Climbfest in May
is expected to attract scores of climbers from throughout Ireland
and further afield.
During the three day event, which was launched in 2005 and is being
organized by Derry-based Colmcille Climbing Club, the climbers will
tackle some of the toughest rockfaces in the country. Club spokesman
Pete Smith said this year's event would be the biggest yet. "
In the first year, we had around 60 people taking part while more
than 100 people took part last year. We certainly are expecting
even more climbers to come along this year," he said. This
is a great opportunity to showcase what Inishowen has to offer,
both from a climbing point of view and a tourism perspective. "The
people coming to the Climbfest are not only from Ireland, we have
had enquiries from people in Europe and America."
The May 2007 Climbfest will take place from 5th - 7th May. A mess
tent and a barbeque will be provided in Culdaff, although people
must bring their own food. A bus to nearby climbing venues will
be available.
The meeting place will be McGroary's Bar and free camping will
be available at Bunagee, behind the pier. Registration costs €10
and the first 100 registrants will be given a free t-shirt courtesy
of McGrory's.
Mr Smith added: "Beginners are very welcome to come and have
a go. Safety gear will be available and qualified instruction can
be provided. "Children must be accompanied by an adult. We'll
make everyone welcome and the party on the Saturday night will include
singing, music, a bonfire and the best of craic."
