MARCH 2008
Grand Canyon Walk for Charity
Carndonagh's Cormac Skinnader and Fahan resident Martina Blake
are travelling to Arizona as part of a 125 strong group of Irish
people on the 19th March to undertake a ten day charity walk to
raise funds for the Irish Wheelchair Association.
In Arizona the Irish party will walk the red rock trails of Sedona
National Park and traverse the Painted Desert before moving on to
the Grand Canyon. The group will cover ten miles a day and finish
up in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Cormac, the Carndonagh GAA club PRO, said he was well on his way
to raising the €5,000 target after holding a number of fundraisers
in the last couple of months. "On St. Stephen's Day the Carn
club have an annual charity match and this year they very generously
gave me the €950 they collected. €750 was raised from
a quiz in the Glen Bar and another quiz was held in Tully's Bar,
as well as an indoor GAA tournament in Malin."
Martina Blake has already exceeded her target. "I asked everyone
I knew to sponsor me and my policy of harassment paid off,"
she joked. "Donegal has one of the highest rates of people
who've become wheelchair bound after accidents on the road and I
think it's great to be going out with relatives of those who are
confined to a wheelchair," she said.
