Top Billing for Clonmany Writer
Writer John Toland is Clonmany's most prolific author with an international
reputation. His name is well known in continental schools and universities
and he is one of the best known philosophers in western Europe.
He was born in Clonmany in the seventeenth century and is the focus
of some new research being carried out by Dr Brian Lambkin, Director
of the Centre for Migration Studies in Omagh.
Dr Lambkin examines the works of Toland and explores his references
to Inishowen archaeology and folklore. This new study can be found
in the Donegal Annual, which has just been published. It also contains
an article on the Clonmany Tithe Wars of the 1830s. Other topics
include Donegal Walled Gardens including those in Inishowen and
Fanad, the 'Balfour' railways, which includes the Carndonagh line,
Cardinal o'Donnell and articles on Donegal folklore, some of which
is based in Inishowen.
There is also an article for Dracula fans based on Bram Stoker's
links with Donegal. There are over 200 pages on the history of the
