EVE
a celebration of creative women
Guildhall Press is pleased to announce the launch of both the book
and CD of EVE
a celebration of creative women
Compiled by Jenni Doherty
The latest venture from local publishing house Guildhall Press
is the launch of a book and audio CD, both with the intriguing title
EVE
a celebration of creative women. The beautifully designed
and illustrated hardback book and accompanying professionally produced
CD emerged from Project EVE, an innovative gathering and showcasing
of the artistic talents of over 55 women from in and around the
North West supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's National
Lottery programme. The multi-disciplinary project included poetry,
song, live performances, creative writing, drama, photography, illustration,
painting, ceramics, sculpture and dance.
Eve Project Co-ordinator Jenni Doherty commented: "The book
and CD contain a diverse collection of creative works, representing
established and emerging talent, some well known, others not so
-yet! Contributors include writers such as Nell McCafferty; Anita
Robinson; Mary Murphy; Felicity McCall; Marilyn McLaughlin; and
Hazel McIntyre; music from the Henry Girls and Tina McLaughlin;
creative writing from members of the Derry Playhouse, the Roe Valley
and the Waterside Theatre Writers' Groups. Art and photography work
is represented by the Visual Art Access/Skillsbuild group at The
Women's Centre, Derry; Limavady ceramist Fiona Cassidy showcases
her work as do Buncrana artist Eva Conboy and New-York based artist
Tina Farren. Further images showcase the work of the Bogside and
Brandywell Women's Group; local scenic photographs; and images of
daily life in Vietnam and Thailand. Some of the contributors are
still at school, the youngest aged fourteen years, whereas others
are rearing families, working, or are retired; the oldest contributor
is in her late seventies."
Jenni continued: "EVE represents an eclectic creative mix
on a backdrop of music, culture and experience which will rejuvenate
the passion of a talent for some and expand the artistic horizons
for others. It is a manifestation of assertiveness and expression,
an interconnected, yet independent, link where women take their
rightful, pivotal role and showcase their creativity. It demonstrates
vibrancy, intelligence, imagination and sincerity with more than
its fair share of wit, verve and style. There are works that illustrate
toughness and resilience; others are emotionally sensitive and overwhelmingly
honest. Other works are surreal, smart and funny, yet all of them
have something in common - that of representing generation upon
generation of women, all eavesdropping and commenting on their lives,
themselves and each other.
"The book also boasts quite a unique section with encouraging
comments of support from some of Ireland's best-selling female authors
such as Martina Devlin, Kate Thompson, Judi Curtin, Marian Keyes,
Tina Reilly, Rose Doyle, Tracy Culleton and Suzanne Higgins.
"Our aim is to acknowledge all these inspirational roots,
and the different creative disciplines in the EVE book and CD communicate
and celebrate all this. These fine threads have been brought together
to produce a wonderful chorus of female voices, images and words
that just have to be heard, seen and read to be fully appreciated."
EVE ...a celebration of creative women, book compiled by Jenni
Doherty, is hardback and on sale at £12.95. EVE CD is on sale
at £7.95. Both are available from Guildhall Press (www.ghpress.com)
