MARCH 2006
Activities for men project launched
The Moville and District Family Resource Centre has established
an Activities for Men project. It builds on the successful Men's
Health Activity Programme that the Centre ran in 2005. That programme
has now become a permanent Wednesday Workout in St. Eugene's Hall.
Nineteen men attend regularly and some of the men come as fathers
bringing their sons to share the workout. The new Activities for
Men project started work in February with funding from the Department
of Family Affairs. It is primary for men who are free during the
day and/or not currently using existing educational or work opportunities.
Project worker, David Simpson, has been visiting men and finding
out about what they are interested in. He has also identified a
range of possible activities including educational trips (Armada
Exhibition in Derry/Bushmills, Distillery), a gardening project,
a photographic archive, a Men's Health Day and speakers to give
talks on issues of local interest.
A project for men may seem like a strange idea but most adult education
courses are attended primarily by women and there are already several
women's networks that offer talks and activities for women locally.
Part of the motivation for the Activities for Men project is to
redress the inequality in provision of activities and courses.
The first meeting of the Activities for Men project will be on
Tuesday 14th March in St. Eugene's Hall, Moville from 12.30 - 3pm
with lunch provided at 1pm. All men are welcome. There will be discussion
about up and coming events, plus a speaker from a similar project
in Downings. Information about the first trip and workshop will
be made available prior to each event.
For more information contact David Simpson on 93 81224 or Mary
McKinney at Moville and District Family Resource Centre on 93 92945.
