JUNE 2006
"The Beauty Queen of Leenane"
Mouthpece Threatre group are rehearsing for the production of "The
Beauty Queen of Leename" by Martin McDonagh since March. It
will be held in Tullyarvan Mill on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th
June at 8pm.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane is Martin McDonagh's first play, written
in eight days in 1996, and it has won numerous awards in Ireland,
England, and North America, including four Tony awards on Broaodway.
In 1997 Martin then aged 27 had four plays running simultaneously
in London.
This black comedy is centred around the age-old mother-daughter
conflict. It explores the very fine line between comedy and tragedy.
The mythologised picture of rural Ireland with its "whimsical
gaiety and folksy charm" is replaced with a contrasting view
of isolation, despair and violence.
This will be Mouthpiece's second production. Last year they staged
Harold Pinter's "The Lover" in the Playhouse. Keith Hughes
the play's director said that Mouthpiece decided on "The Beauty
Queen of Leenane" because it is guaranteed to entertain with
it's dark humour and fast paced story. He said tha the group are
looking forward to their two nights in Tullyarvan Mill and are hoping
for a good turn out both nights, despite the World Cup.
Admission €10 and (8 concessions) bar available (over 18s).
Tickets can be reserved by calling the Mill 074 93 61613 or else
arrive on the night.
