JANUARY 2006

New Playground for Moville

Plans for a new €80,000 playground in Moville have been unveiled by the committee of the Moville Playground Group this week. A full version of the plans will be shown in the window of Gillen's Supermarket on Main Street Moville from Monday.

"We want people to be able to view the plans for themselves," said Catherine Falls, chairperson of the Moville Playground Group. The group was formed in 2004, when t responded to an invitation from Donegal County Council for applications from local groups for the new playgrounds. "We drew up our own submission, pointing out that the play facilities that exist in Moville at present are totally inadequate, and that what parents and children need is a new playground which acts as an incentive for children to take the fresh air and exercise they need," said Dr Falls. "We also felt that a good playground here would boost tourism efforts in the area."

By April 2005, the group's application had been given top priority for the Inishowen area, and they are now hopeful of receiving a €70,000 grant this year. The money will be provided jointly by Donegal Council and Peace II funds. The shortfall will be met by fundraising efforts, which are being coordinated by committee member Liam Skelly. Liam is calling on local people to support their fundraisers, which start next Friday night (20th January) with a Texas Hold Em in McNamara's Hotel, at 8.30p. "Entry is €30 and buy-in is €10, says Liam, who is hoping for a big turnout on the night. Liam joined the committee last September, after attending a public meeting organised by the group to consult on its proposed plans at that time. Since then, the group has appointed Tyrone-based Unique Playgrounds to supply the playground surface and equipment, after a tender process which invited responses from a range of suppliers. "We opted for Unique Playgrounds mainly because each piece of their equipment can be played with in so may ways, allowing children to use their imagination and to get a different experience each time they play," says P.R.O. Trish Hegarty, a founder member of the group. "This will keep children coming back to use the playground more often."

Managing Director of Unique Playgrounds, David Wards says "The proposed site for the play ground in Moville is one of great natural beauty, so we wanted to create a playground that complemented the site while still addressing the needs of the children, and that Unique playground equipment provides opportunities to enhance not only essential motor skills but to encourage active brain development which helps develop reading and writing skills.
